Day #171 – My Grandma
Dear God I’m Grateful For My Grandma
.
There are many women in my life who have contributed to who I am today, but one whose lessons still live with me are those of my grandmother. In my eyes, she could do anything.
.
Grandma would grow her own food in the backyard, wash her own clothes, fix anything that was broken, bring people together, prepare amazing meals everyday, help anyone who called or knocked on her door, all while gaining love and respect from the entire neighborhood.
.
She was the only one in my family who would let me sleep in until noon, the only one who would make a separate pan of cornbread just for me because she knew it was my favorite, and she was the only one whose opinion mattered when I chose to get married young and it seemed like everyone else was against me.
.
When I was engaged at 20 years old, she asked me 3 questions:
- Does he love me?
- Does he love God?
- Does he have a job or go to school?
.
The answers to each of these was yes and her advice was as long as he fits those those 3, everything else we can figure out together. She then proceeded to tell me the story of how my grandad proposed to her as she and her son watched their house burn down. (Talk about a hero)
.
Her strength resonates with me today because while most were out enjoying fireworks and festivities on the 4th of July, I found myself at home washing clothes by hand. Our washer and dryer went out mid cycle, leaving a load of clothes soaked in water that wouldn’t drain. So instead of waiting three days and leaving my clothes to ruin, I decided to do as I was taught and wash them by hand. Thank God, for grandma’s Saturday laundry lessons, as I knew exactly what I was doing and was taken back to my time spent with her.
.
It’s amazing how much wisdom our elders pass onto us when it comes to living life. My Grandma was a prime example of a Titus 2 woman, and her lessons will live on with me throughout my lifetime.
.
“Teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.” – Titus 2: 3-5 NLT
