Day #29 – My Husband

Dear God I’m Grateful For My Husband

Today is Valentine’s Day, but with the Holiday aside, I’m so grateful for the man that I’m blessed to spend my life with! I used to romanticize the title “husband”, but when I biblically researched what it required to be a husband, I was shocked at the amount of sacrifice and responsibility.

Ephesians 5:21-33 says:

“And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. And we are members of his body. As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

So the Lord instructs husband to:

– Lead his family (the church) to salvation in Christ.

– Give up his life to make sure his wife is Holy and put before God.

– Cleanse his wife and his household by washing them in the Word of God.

– Based on the task above, He himself must dwell in the Word of God.

– Love his wife as he loves his own body (cleanse her, strengthen her, give her rest, bring her peace, etc).

– Leave his father and mother to become one with his wife.

– Love his wife as the Bible instructs us to love ( love is patient, kind, not jealous, boastful or proud or rude, is not irritable, never gives up, never loses faith or hope, and always endures.)

Husband’s are given great responsibility over their households and I am blessed to have a husband who embraces his biblical responsibilities and loves me the way Christ instructs him. To meet a boy in elementary school and look back years later to see how God orchestrated a beautiful love story fills my heart with thanksgiving and awe. I am so grateful to call Durand Robertson my husband, and to serve him as his wife.
